So I'm moving to Japan.
And at the moment, I'm also scared and stressed out. It's probably a productive of lack of sleep, which I imagine is also brought on by how utterly unprepared I am right now. There's so much to get done before I leave, but I am in this semi-state of denial about how much must get done. And there's the fear of change. My heart wants to go and my brain says it's a great idea and a stellar opportunity.
But I'm scared. I guess that's the best way of putting it. The littlest things these days are stressing me out and making me worry. Some people's greatest fear is death. Mine is being forgotten. It's bad enough that people are crappy at communicating while I'm here. Who's going to forget me when I'm gone? Little things like my best friends forgetting to get back to me and being unreliable are making me scared. I don't really know how to tell people, though, when those people have already identified that they're bad at it. And they apologize. But I say, if you're really sorry and you know you do it, maybe you should try a bit harder to Not Do That in the future.
Maybe it's a character flaw, that I try to be reliable. It seems to me that 99.9% of people who I know are not, though I know that people are caught up with their own lives. But as caught up with my own life as I am, I do try to be there for people. Maybe that's something that I should stop doing, since it's not so often reciprocated.

Hey, only two weeks in between!
Not bad! ;)
The two weeks have been an absolute whirlwind of insanity. Short story: Monday of last week, I had a phone interview and on Friday I was driving down to LA to do an in-person interview. In between and after all that was crazy crazy crazy.
I was completely petrified that I'd wind up unprepared when I got down to LA and anyway there were a million things to do to get ready, on top of work and everything else. But I made it, the interview went alright and I'll hear back from them in a few weeks about whether or not I've got In.
The after part was pretty interesting too.
I stayed with my cousin Tiffani, who was gracious enough to let me crash on her couch, let me be annoying and wake her boyfriend up in the morning with all the sounds of me moving around the house and who took me out and around Santa Monica for the weekend. We ended up going to a pretty good little fusion restaurant, a really nifty bar downtown and ambling drunkenly down the famous Santa Monica pier. By the way (I didn't know this before), but Baywatch was filmed on the beaches of Santa Monica. Random fact!
The bar that we went to made totally amazing drinks. I only wish I could remember what they (or it) was called:
Sunday morning took us to the farmer's market and walking along the beach to downtown. Farmer's markets are always a treat and this one did not disappoint. She picked up some produce and we nabbed some amazing eats:
And because we hung around forever waiting for my sandwich to grill up, the guy at the booth was nice enough to bestow upon us some amazzzzing bread pudding topped with Meyer lemon curd. It was fantastic:
That lemon curd, incidentally, has got me really enthused about all the lemons that are sitting in my kitchen.
Afterwards, we listened to the live marimba band (so fun!) and laughed at the animals being silly at the petting zoo:
We then walked along the beach and strolled downtown, then returned to her place, after which I went and drove around LA.
It was, all in all, a pretty decent little trip. <3
This week happens to have been busy also. This weekend, however, has been very nice on account of the fact that it has been so... nothing filled. Not that I don't have things to do, but... I've made a pretty leisurely weekend out of it so far.
Today I baked! Tomorrow, I'm baking more, seeing Erica for Bridesmaids, cooking dinner and potentially going for a run somewhere in all of this. Monday, I've got to get my eyes checked (provided that places are open) and I might go rock climbing!
Today I got excited about cooking and decided that I wanted to do something with the eight million lemons that are sitting in my kitchen (just kidding). So I decided for dinner tomorrow, I'd make artichoke lemon pasta sauce with angel hair pasta. Today, I made a lemon galette which was... interesting. It wasn't quite as delicious as I thought it'd be, but it wasn't bad either.
For those unfamiliar with a galette (I know I was :p ), it can be described as a free-form tart. Typically tarts are formed in round or rectangular shapes by a tart pan (which I just got yesterday and can't wait to use). I felt lazy today and didn't feel like pre-baking a pie crust, so I went with a galette. What differentiates a tart/galette from a pie is the depth and its contents. Pies typically tend to be deeper and with more fluid ingredients than tarts. Tarts tend to consist of fewer ingredients and are smaller by volume. I love galettes because they're really pretty damned easy to make... I guess you could say pies are easy too, but the step to pre-bake the pie crust in some recipes is just a little too much for me sometimes. (I'm lazy.) At any rate, galettes are super easy to throw together and can be savory or sweet.
Lemon Tart/Galette (Take One)
Ingredients:
3 lemons, zested, removed of peel and sliced into super teeny tiny thin slices
1/4 cup sugar (Note: I think this might have been where I went wrong)
1 tablespoon of butter
1 disc of pie crust from Trader Joe's at room temp (I totally cheated... I should make my own, but their's is so good)
egg wash
I preheated the oven to 450 degrees. I put the disc of pie crust onto a sheet of parchment paper and cut about 1/2 of the butter into chunks and scattered it onto the dough. I sprinkled half of the sugar onto the pie crust (note to self: next time, lots more sugar) and layered on top of the sugar the slices of lemon, in concentric circles that were one inch from the edge of the crust. Once all the lemon slices were layered, I sprinkled the rest of the sugar on top of the lemons and folded the edges of the pie crust over. I (should have but didn't) brushed the edges with egg wash for color and sprinkled some coarse sugar onto the edges. I popped the galette into the oven for about 20 minutes, turning the pan halfway through baking. Once the the crust was brown, I took the galette out of the oven and set it on a rack to cool. Once cool, it's your galette for the taking!

Exhibit One: Tiff's Poached Eggs with Steak (Yum)
Exhibit Two: Apple Sandwich (Pink Lady Apples, some kind of delicious not too sharp cheese, grilled) and a Spring Pea and Potato Salad (will have to make that, pronto)

Save that zest! It's invaluable and dee-licious. I'll be sticking mine in the freezer and making lemon poppy seed muffins. :)
I'm not big enough (yet *wink*) for product placement, but some of the best tools ever are a Microplane grater/zester (since they make varying sizes) and a Shun paring knife. Shuns are super sharp which is awesome for delicate jobs like this.
Before folding.
After folding.
After baking!
Photo Two, with a tad more light. Not bad!
So the next time I make this, I will be using more sugar and possibly lemon curd. I kinda wanted to go the quick route with this, so I ended up with something that was a bit more tart towards the center, but with a sweeter, tangier taste towards the edges. Smitten Kitchen (<3) has a recipe for a one-lemon tart which I may use as a base next time, but I just think that the whole lemon slices provide such a beautiful presentation.
Tomorrow, I'm planning on doing that pasta and I am toying with the idea of making chocolate zucchini bread muffins again. They were so good, that I'm getting a special request from them from my One and Only Tim Number One. And since I'm meeting Erica tomorrow, a little baked treat might be nice since I think she's going to be having the little one this week. Yay, exciting! Stayed tuned for tomorrow's treats! I'm also going to make a pear/ricotta/honey galette to try and promote my mum's honey business a bit. :)
Until then, bisoux and a bientot!

Kind of a fresh start, I guess you'd say.
It's been a long time since I've been single and I have to tell you... I kind of love it. I haven't been single in ages and days; I guess it would be accurate to say that the past 5 or 6 years of my life I've spent in some relationship or another, which I now feel is SO much of my formative years. It's all had its ups and downs, to be sure, and I wouldn't change the things that have transpired, but I can definitely say that with everything that I've been through, I can really appreciate the freedom I have and the choices that are available to me.
This Friday, I finally took me on a date. That is to say: I made me dinner, fed me chocolate cake for dessert and whisked me off to bed after sniffling away to a lovely, romantic movie. And it was fantastic. In fact, my life lately, though busy, has been, on average, pretty damned good. There have been little hiccups along the way, but I think I'm getting better at appreciating things for what they're worth and taking lessons from those experiences. Three cheers to that!!
So Friday, I made Gnocchi alla Sorrentina, added chopped artichoke hearts, spinach and sundried tomatoes and seared a balsamic-marinated steak. Unfortunately, in my tipsy state, I decided not to take photos... Thus there are no pictures of this feast. I also desserted on a chocolate ganache cake and red wine. I do know how to treat myself well. :D My license for treating myself so kindly was due to the fact that I had entire house to myself and a little dog as a companion.
He nibbled at rawhide while I nibbled on dinner.
Saturday was a little crazy! I cleaned up the house, baked at mine, then went to the Greek festival. My reason for baking was because my Mexican mama was leaving for Guadalajara. I wanted to give her some treats to take along with her when she was on the journey down. <3
First up, lemon poppy seed bread, in muffin form (for packability and ease of consumption on the road):
Oops... the last of the batter. :D I also made chocolate zucchini bread, also in muffin form:
Can you believe that batter? Does that even look remotely good? (I thought it looked weird.) Well let me tell you... They were GOOD. Recipes for both kinds are courtesy of Joy of Baking.com. And... I added a ton of chocolate chips. As Tim said, they were "where it's at". :) Here's what it looks like just before baking:
And I haven't had time to take a picture of the finished product yet... I've been too busy eating the fruits of my labor!
Then off to the Greek festival for beer! Just kidding! Max and I got gyros:
This is mine... Missing a little cuz I was starving and it was delicious! A gyro is lamb and beef pressed together, slow roaster (I think) in a giant rotating thing of meat, sliced off, then served with red onion, tzatziki sauce and tomato. I ran into Gordon there (yayyyy), had beers then Max and I went off for some loukomoulades:
These are basically little doughnuts but so much fluffier and lighter. They are cooked in an enormous vat of oil that looks like this:
Please excuse the photo, I was a little tipsy at the time.
Today, Sunday, was about REST and relaxation. I went for a gorgeous drive out to Livermore, admiring how beautiful the cloudy sky was, picked up some pizza and beer and went to Tim's to watch the Sharks... Lose. :( Next time, boys!
Then off to Lauren's for some girl time and wine! Good stories were had and I think we shared some valuable lessons with each other. I felt like I was a sage old woman dispatching advice: "Life is short, take the time to enjoy being happy." :)
It was a lovely weekend all in all. Very busy, but so nice! Hope yours was too!

Gotta get better at doing this!
It's been an absolutely insane week, and scratch my last post; I need SLEEP not a hobby. I just started working at Williams-Sonoma again (part-time) and coupled with a crazy stressful week at my more-real job, I am pooped. The kind of exhausted you don't feel until your body and mind give out and you stop being able to articulate things and your body can't think of things to say. It's embarrassing! And sad.
So tonight, I came home early from a dance party (at which I very sorely lost the last two rounds) and am looking forward to enjoying a documentary called "Running the Sahara". I'll let you know how it goes. :)
Otherwise, my weekend is going to be filled with other lovely things... So far I've planned a run in the hills, which will be lovely in the California spring time. This past week I went to Las Trampas. Last week I went to Pleasanton Ridge. I'm hoping to step out more often, but with my work schedule starting to pick up, I might have to keep it to a few days per week... We'll see how it goes!
I'm also sending a box off to Japan! A few birthday-type things will need to be acquired before I send it all off, but otherwise, my items and customs forms will be ready to go. :) I'm so excited!
Hope you're having a lovely start to the weekend!
Bisoux! <3

I need a hobby!
It's that time again... The sun is starting to come out and it's warm enough that I don't need to snuggle under the covers all evening long. With that and the end of the day sunlight... Comes boredom!!
Not like I don't have enough to do, but I think I am going to start running and going to the gym. And possibly skating on Tuesdays or Thursdays? Not sure about that yet...
Yesterday, Stephanie and I went to Rockridge Home, a cute little store in (you guessed it) the Rockridge neighborhood of Oakland. I had a Groupon which I used to get:
All in all I think I made out pretty well. :)

- Umbra Tweet Wall Decor
- A Bodum Stainless Steel Portable Coffee/Tea Press
- New rollerball perfume by Thymes... Kimono Rose Scent. It's so pretty!!
- A Moleskine recipe journal (not quite sold on that one yet... It may have to go back)
- And A Head Massager.
All in all I think I made out pretty well. :)

Mochas and Making a Life
Cold is the water
It freezes your already cold mind
Already cold, cold mind
And death is at your doorstep
And it will steal your innocence
But it will not steal your substance
But you are not alone in this
And you are not alone in this
As brothers we will stand and we'll hold your hand
Hold your hand
And you are the mother
The mother of your baby child
The one to whom you gave life
And you have your choices
And these are what make man great
His ladder to the stars
But you are not alone in this
And you are not alone in this
As brothers we will stand and we'll hold your hand
Hold your hand
And I will tell the night
Whisper, "Lose your sight"
But I can't move the mountains for you
I'm listening to Mumford and Sons' "Timshel". It's so good. The whole album is good... I suggest that you download it, whoever you may be. :) Timshel, as Google has told me, is a Hebrew word, which (roughly) translates to "Thou Mayest". The idea is discussed in John Steinbeck's East of Eden, in which he discusses the different translations of the Bible and ideas which are represented. The idea of Timshel is that humans possess choice, which makes us as great as gods. Isn't that a wonderful idea?
I'm sitting at La Scala, hunkering down with my resume and cover letter and a computer that very badly needs to be cleaned. I'm writing with designs to work on and achieve a new life path... Easier said than done. But I'm choosing to change and transform my life and that is a beautiful thing.

On The Heels of Making My Weekends Less Insane...
I love blogs. Lately, I've been obsessed with redecorating and crafting, so I have been getting into some heavy duty knitting and home-love blogs. Among my favorites are Apartment Therapy, Ikea Hackers, and Deliciously Organized. I've also joined Ravelry, which is a crazy site for knitters and crotcheters with free (!!) patterns and more yarns than you can shake a needle at. It's delightful. I've been inspired to:
About three weeks, I identified the need to stop making my weekends so bloody insane. Well, I didn't listen to me so where did I end up? Sick. As a dog! I lost almost two days of work (nearly a third by being utterly incoherent) and a good chunk of the weekend, sleeping most of the time and staring at my computer monitor the rest of the time, with half a lung and even less breath. Guess that was the rest I needed.
In truth, it wasn't all my busy weekends' fault... I've been stressed out. But it's given me some nice perspective on the kind of life I need to live - one where I'm not driving myself into the ground every day and weekend. This weekend was quite low-key: I slept in, knitted, watched some shows and movies (who doesn't love The Notebook?) and actually read. Reading was utterly enjoyable. I've got to get me a new book to start reading.
Since I am *finally* updating my little blog, I will post about a cooking adventure from about a week and a half back: my char-siu bao cooking adventure.
- Use black-and-white photos of my favorite celebrities in black and white frames to dress things up.
- Re-decorate my room in some totally crazy ways.
- Knit a pretty new cowl scarf.

I've got to stop making my weekends so bloody insane.
I've been on a strange sleep pattern lately, and this has not helped with the over all chaos that is my life. When I mean chaos, I mean relative chaos... My life isn't actually that crazy, which is nice. The drama that is in my life mostly belongs to others, where I play a spectator or aide.
Yesterday morning I awoke at 5:45am after perhaps four hours of sleep. I woke up early to accompany my friend to his first half marathon, which was very exciting. I'd like to think of myself as the kind of person who goes the extra mile for my friends (Pun!) and try as hard as I can to be there for them when they need me to be. Yesterday was not an exception.
Post-race, I ended up going to the city to Marrakech, a Morrocan place with dancing, hookah, and food. It was my friend's birthday. I think he was very happy that all sort of people showed up. :) However, I didn't get back home until after 1am... Ew. And I fell asleep in the car, which affected my sleep so that I couldn't fall back asleep right away. :p
Around 3:15am, we had an earthquake!
How do I know I'm very Californian? When earthquakes don't bother me in the slightest. They don't phase me at all. Also, when I can pretty accurately guess the magnitude of the quake before the results are posted on the USGS website. :)
Anyway, enough boring stuff, This weekend, I'm cleaning my boots, getting some stuff together to donate and likely taking Stephanie back to San Jose. I've also decided that this week, I am going to make char siu bao, which are Chinese barbecued pork buns. Pictures to come when this happens!
I also told my friend I was going to post pictures up on how to make chocolate-dipped candied ginger... So I'll do that too! Maybe I'll tint it red in light of Chinese New Year, which is Thursday. :D

So... This is it.
Bienvenue. It's been a long time since I've written anything online that was intended for people to even glimpse at. But here it is. I received encouragement from my friend and co-worker who's taken on the mighty ambition of working on not one, but three (!) blogs. Amazing.
Mine, however, I plan on keeping pretty simple. For I lead a pretty simple life. Looking back, I've found my previous blog to be so young and amusing. Here's hoping that this won't be the same.
This will be a little cross-section of my life. A project blog, of sorts, because I love my projects. I love cooking, have recently learned how to knit (and now knit like a mad woman), and have somewhat-recently moved back into my parents... The revamping of my room itself is a project all on its own.
What of the name? The name of this blog is derived from linguistic terms. (I love linguistics.) In linguistic terms, a mora is a unit which makes up a syllable. A bimoraic syllable is composed of two morae. And a mora can be broken up into smaller pieces, but we won't get into that.
I've taken the idea of a mora with some poetic license and used it in a way to compare my life to one long string of language. There are bits and pieces of my life and there are bits and pieces of language which shape us. So, I'm hoping here to write a little about the bits and pieces that make up my simple existence.
Merci et bonsoir. A retour.
P.S. First posts... Hawkward.
